Press release:

Pendragon Theatre is proud to announce the award of a $100,000 grant from the Department of Environmental Conservation.

“Award of the Smart Growth grant initiative demonstrates DEC’s support of Pendragon Theatre’s commitment to renovate and build our new downtown facility in an environmentally appropriate manner, “said Marc Gitlitz, President.

Pendragon received support for the environmental aspects of its project, specifically permeable pavement and drought-tolerant landscaping, and LEED Integrative Project Planning and Design Process including registration, modeling, commissioning, and documentation. “This round of smart growth grants will help support a broad range of initiatives designed to build stronger, more livable communities throughout the Adirondack and Catskill Parks, and complement our ongoing efforts to make these regions world-class destinations,” Governor Andrew Cuomo said.

Pendragon’s project supports the special conditions of the Adirondack Park through creating employment opportunities, developing significant cultural amenities for both residents and visitors, and supporting arts as an environmentally-friendly economic investment.

“For the Adirondack Park to be whole it needs not only protected wilderness, it needs arts to help foster and sustain vibrant communities. And for Saranac Lake that means the Park needs the new Pendragon Theatre,” said Willie Janeway, Executive Director, Adirondack Council.

Pendragon’s planned construction enhances the environmental quality of the park through adaptive re-use of an underutilized building in a priority section of town, moving to a walkable location, and planned LEED silver certification.

“This grant award will enable Pendragon to integrate excellent theatre design and sustainable architecture using LEED, the world’s foremost green building rating system,” said Harry Gordon, Pendragon Advisory Board Member and LEED Fellow.

The only year-round professional theatre in the Park, Pendragon is celebrating its 40th season. As a valued and integral part of the arts community in Saranac Lake, Pendragon provides entertainment, education, enrichment, and economic value to the community. Pendragon also tours a fall production to schools throughout the Adirondacks, to locations which often do not have access to professional theatre and are areas of significant poverty. Pendragon’s vision is to present outstanding professional theater, challenge boundaries, captivate the imagination, and enrich and engage the community. Pendragon endeavors to promote lifelong learning and to be at the heart of the arts in the community through work that celebrates and cultivates the beauty and diverse voices of our Adirondack home.
